ONLINE PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING

ONLINE TRAUMA COUNSELLING

What is Trauma Counselling?

Trauma is the body’s response to an emotionally charged event that can have severe effects on an individual’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

This occurs in response to an external stress factor, which can vary in terms of its severity. The severity in which one responds to an incident is completely subjective to each individual.

An experience that one individual could walk away from without second thought, could severely traumatise someone else.

People who have undergone a trauma may find themselves reliving the event, even through dreams. Traumatised individuals may find themselves unable to move past the traumatising event, and therefore struggle to function effectively because of it. In this case, online trauma counselling can be a much needed, and very effective lifeline.

Some symptoms that an individual may experience after a traumatic event can include:

  • insomnia
  • headaches
  • loss of appetite
  • feelings of anger or fear

Online trauma counselling assists and guides the client in coming to terms with the aftermath of the trauma – the way it made the client feel, emotions associated with it.

Examples of trauma may include anything from childhood physical and/or sexual abuse, adulthood assault or sexual assault, loss of a loved one, divorce, infidelity, separation, bullying, or even merely witnessing a traumatic event.

Traumatic memories live in the body in the form of stored emotional layers that can result in other abnormal thoughts or behaviours. These can affect the way in which you manage your life and relationships. Trauma (including PTSD) is recognised as one of the biggest contributing factors in addiction, depression, anxiety and a wide range of conditions or behaviours that can affect an individual’s wellbeing. Processing through and overcoming trauma is a necessity to leading a healthy and balanced life, mentally and emotionally.

Will Trauma Counselling Help Me?

Everyone has suffered traumatic experiences throughout the course of their life. However, it’s when these traumatic experiences disrupt us from effectively living our every-day lives, or involves bad dreams or reliving the experience(s), online trauma counselling should definitely be considered. We all experience and process our experiences as unique individuals, so if you’re experiencing any symptoms of trauma, or just feel the need to talk about it, then betterME Therapy is here for you!

Trauma counselling aims to equip you with coping mechanisms and encourages a move away from being stuck or controlled by past experiences. Where trauma has occurred, and the feelings associated with it have been suppressed, trauma counselling aims to process through and validate these feelings. This is done with the intention of the client gaining a deeper understanding of themselves and the way in which they have responded to the traumatic event, enabling them to move past it with confidence.

Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence.”
